I had issues with starting and fuel consumption and lack of power. firstly it was very hard to start hot and cold. i did not have leakoff pipe problems or did not have fuel returning back from the pump. i changed the plugs which did nothing so i got it plugged in by spudh with his faultmate and it showed that my engine temp sensor was giving a reading of -36 deg c which would mean that fuel was being injected excessive to compensate for low temp. we sorted the sensor and then realised that my pump timing was way off so we sorted that (at the coast looking out on the atlantic ocean..baltic) when we had the pump timing and sensor done it started first turn of the key and even on tickover it ran nicer . i now have much better power and fuel economy has really improved . it would be advisible for anyone with a p38 diesel to check the timing modulation as i did mine 2 years ago and it was out a lot again in about 40k . i was delighted until the following morning when i noticed nearly half a tank of diesel had vanished and i found a leak off pipe had come off on my way home from spudh,s house. sorted that went for a drive noticed a viberation and found a uj on drive shaft totally busted . many thanks to spudh and his faultmate his help and his knowledge.:)
