I've noticed this for a while now,a high speed spinning noise from under the battery,NSF,after I turn the engine off.I'd always assumed this was the cooling fan and not worried about it.But the other day I had to run the engine for just a few minutes while I rearrange the family fleet on the drive.I got the noise,which I was certain couldnt be the fan as it hadnt been running long enough.I popped the bonnet and no fan was running,the noise was from under the battery,I couldn't see any further than that.Then I noticed what appeared to be steam venting from under the car at the same location.After a quick look,there is a stainless or ally vent pipe pointing down,so obviously its meant to be happening.But,to satisfy my curiosity,what exactly is happening?
Can someone tell me what it all is,and more to the point,should I be concerned at all.

Your warp core is failing.
Best eject it or risk destroying your neighbourhood with the ensuing explosion.
Or, it could be your FBH.
 
Its like the Webasto pre heater I had fitted to my X5.....Just an earlier BMW version.....The pipe is an exhaust don't be surprised if you see it bellowing out fumes from time to time.....I think it kicks in at temperatures below 5 degrees. The one on my X5 had a remote so I could start it without going out of the house but I don't think we have that luxury available with these versions. It basically helps heat the car!!

so what,may I ask,is a fuel burner heater? apart from the thing making a noise and giving off fumes.

My understanding is that it heats the engine so you can have a nice warm cab and not worry about waiting for the engine to heat up to optimum temp.

Dont suppose you can get it to boil up some water for a pot of tea,something to compliment all those bloody cup holders.

I assume that means the engine will reach its optimum working temp quicker which aside from giving a nice warm cab means you can put your foot down sooner than if you didn't have the FBH.

Mine sometimes makes a noise like a fog horn..... Only noticed since doing the EGR Blank. :confused:
 
ah,thats made me think.I've bypassed the egr on mine.But I sometimes get a groaning noise (not quite fog horn) after start up,which I assumed was the alternator singing its death song.The noise only last about 30 seconds or so.

Not the duck noise is it?????? How have u blanked the vacuum pipe?
 
Sorry I call it a blank......This is the one I have.....

Mine was a groan/fart/duck noise on shutdown and had instructions from Graham Ponty on here (Top Geezer) on how to sort it.

Let me know if this is your blank/bypass and I might be able to help with that noise. Does it do it when lifting off the accelerator at all?

same bypass as your picture.I only ever get a groan/rumble type noise just after start up,no other time.Thats why I think it'll be the alternator.
