According to my friend Haynes sat on my desk
The speedo drive is only fitted to pre June 2000 PG1 gearboxes (pre ABS) after this there isnt one it picks up electronically from ABS sensors etc
Pre June is on top of gearbox housing near the inner end of right hand drive shaft
Access is poor (now theres a statement) & requires undertray removal

This is typical of most modern cars (post 2000) that are fitted with ABS. Possible problems are ABS sensor, speed sender or (unfortunately very likely) a fault in the cluster.
Most manufacturers consider the cluster a black box unit (ie Sealed and unrepairable) but some can be taken apart and repaired by a specialist - or by you if you are really good at soldering
