they do get hard to remove especially if they have not been off for a while try turning them a bit then get a large screw driver under the top and prize slowly
Probably best replace the plug leads. I've had problems in the past (on a Fiesta) where the leads failed after replacing plugs. They were hard to remove like you say and must have cracked, they were fine for a while but after a few weeks the car started to chug on load. I was stupid enough to trust a mechanic who replace the coil pack twice before I looked at it myself and found the real cause of the problem.
I replace the plugs and leads on my 04 1.8 Freelander last night and it made an amazing difference to the way it drives.
For the sake of a few quid it is false economy not to.
