I towed my digger to a job last week and whilst under load up a steep hill, I noticed a smell of hot rubber. I pulled over and checked wheels on trailer etc, no problems. The rest of the journey no more smell. On the way back the same thing. No sound of belts squealing. Any ideas please?

any joy with this as mine does the same only on a steep hill strange can seem to see any problems brakes not getting hot and clutch seems ok

If it was the clutch, the revs would rise a bit quicker than the speed usually. Sounds like engine load increase causing excess heat. Is the exhaust smoking alot when under heavy load?

jamesmartin , your spot on clutch starting to slip , can you recomend a clutch ie valeo sach etc
I stuck a valeo one in and seemed to be pretty good.

Make sure you buy the strengthened release fork and a new spigot bearing though (and don't forget to grease it)

I will say I replaced mine because it was slipping as a result of oil coming from the engine on my old 300tdi Disco 1, so I didn't get the same smell as your describing, however, I would check the bell housing for oil, as it may be worth replacing the rear crank oil seal whilst your in there! ;)
