my problem is this:

when i've just started the defender, the windscreen wipers sometimes won't work for about 5 minutes, and when they start they'll pitifully drag across the screen, sometimes only once. after the engine's been on for about ten minutes they respond to me turning them on straight away although they still go jerkily

this happened last winter and then went away when the weather warmed up again, does anyone have any idea what might be causing it and what i could do to fix it?

P.S. this problem also only seems to happen the first time i put the engine on, if i drive around for a bit, switch off and then go back they work fine

have the same issue here too! it also wont work on the second fastest setting unless you put it on the fastest setting for a while first!?

Sounds like the motor is weak and feeble, look for a stronger one
 
Could be dodgy connections somewhere, mine are slow unless its peeing down cause the motor is knackered and they wont stop after being on for a while:rolleyes:
 
The gear box on the end of the motor gets stiff over time, a clean up and fresh lube will help, also check spindles for free movement.

Gonna take mine off next week or so and check wheel boxes etc, I think they are the same on a fender as the old Minis, hope so cause I got a spare one:)

The motor is easy, take a few screws aout the left side of the dash, handle comes off, more screws come out, medium sized trim get released (beware of the wires connecting the speaker)

And the motor should be the only thing thing there
 
Mine were slow to start and would then speed up after the first wipe, replaced the motor and all ok. Bearmach OE replacement, made by Lucas.
Took the old motor apart, nothing obviously wrong with it but it was the original (date stamped 1986) so I think it had given good service.
 
My rear one was very slow yesterday, and then a big spark came out of the switch and I think it's blown the fuse!

Bit annoying, but going to look at it next week perhaps - in process of moving house!
