Hi all,

On Tuesday I took my 2005 1.8 Freelander in for its first service (at a proper dealership), all went quite smooth and it was all done by 2:00. I went to check my oil level today and noticed they had put waaaaaaaayyy to much in!!! so i had take it back and get them to drain out the excess oil! (Which took over an hour)

Would this have done any damage to the engine??

Is it worth a letter to Land Rover??

Depends how much, basicly, when you put in oil your filling the sump up, you can go to the very top of the sump plus some more quite safely which is a litre or something, its when the engine components start sitting in a bath of oil contantly and slamming into a pool of oil that you run into problems.

When I change my oil I usualy let it sit just over the top of the 'hi' mark.

That sounds bad to me. 4-5cms must equate to quite a lot of oil. A main dealer should know how much oil to put in. If they can't get that right what else have they screwed up?

4-5cm on the dip stick! F*&K is all I can say!

Did you run it for many miles like this? How the hell did they manage that, sounds like they put it in then forgot it was in and put it in again!

Was she burning oil when you picked her up? I'd imagine with that much oil she would have been chuffing like a steam train !!
Right a letter to Land Rover and explain the problem to them. At least that way they will be aware there could be a problem down the line which was down to overfilling the engine with oil.

I would also meet with the franchise manager and see what he is willing to do, write the letter, but don't send it until after you have met with the manager, use it as ammunition if he maintains a "not our fault" manner after your have expressed your concerns. He may make a good offer and deal with your problem quietly, they certainly don't want land rover pulling there franchise from them if they have problems like this.

It happened to the garage our Discovery was bought from, about 5 years ago Land Rover simply said they weren't happy with the building because it was being shared with a Volvo, it was one of the last remaining friendly atmosphere franchise garages. It was a really classy joint, which shows Land Rover are not to bothered about pulling a franchise here and there.

I still can get over how much oil they put in!

being a tech for a land rover dealer i cant understand how someone could put that much oil in the engine,

the 1.8 engine takes 4.3 litres of oil

his mistake must have been inputting the wrong figure into the electronic oil pump and then not checking the level,

i know i would complain a little if it was me, inconvenience of going back after just shelling out around £300
