Has anybody had trouble fitting a steering relay into a galvanised chassis? Have been trying to fit mine but it seems to be fouling the cylindrical hole in the chassis, side closest to the rad. It is a second hand relay. Am thinking about buying a new one but fear I might come across the same problem.

Never fitted one to a galv. chassis but most likely to be chassis not relay.
Looks like a job of patience with a file or flap disc etc. Be sure to put plenty copperslip on when you fit it. You may be the poor bugger who has to get it out again.

If its an original series relay I would keep it. Replacement ones (i.e. britpart) have been known to have the shaft shear.

Its why I got my old shaft sleeved with the collars instead of getting a replacement shaft

Plenty of slip on it. It's the original relay. By the looks of it the bottom cover has a slight lip on it and stands out further than the body itself. This is what's fouling the chassis. Was wondering whether to going it down so it's flush with the body of the relay. It will fit for sure then.

My mate bought a Bearmach unit to fit his new Galv chassis....the hole was a tad smaller than the relay body...in the end he had to rebuild the old unit which he thinks is original,

So it looks like its the pattern units that are to big...I suggested getting the grinder on the relay body....he was not keen on that.

Nick.

Could it just be the galvanised coating on the metal making the hole too big?

If it is just the bottom plate take it off then refit when in place , as long as you do not hit the shaft to far downward it will not fall to bits.
If you grind the bottom plate down it might be too slack for the retaining plate , check its dimension on there.
Mine was too slack in Marsland chassis had to pack it out to stop movement

Hi Blackburn, took the bottom plate off and it went straight in. Refitted the bottom plate but in doing so lost a fair bit of oil. I guess I can take the top plate off and refill?

You can refill oil through small bolt holes take two out so one acts as vent.
You beat me too it Nick

Anyone know the thread size of the bolts? Am thinking of swapping one for a grease nipple in the future to make lubrication easier
