I'm new to older landrovers. I drive a discovery3 during the week but i want to get a series 3 for w.end use only. I have 5k to spend and I'm not very handy with mechanics so something simple and fairly reliable would be best. I have a couple of local indep. LR garages nearby so I would have back up if needed.

I like the look of the series3's but would I be more sensible to get a 90?

Try drive a series 3 and a 90 they are a bit different due to one being leaf springs and one being coils.

£5k is a good budget for either, you should be able to get a good 'un!

Don't buy the first one you see! Read and research as much as you can about buying them/owning them etc - see if there is anyone local to you with a good known land rover you can look at to get a bench mark as there are plenty of tarted up dogs out there!

If you don't want to go particularly fast then I'd go for a series primarily just because its a series land rover and they look better than a 90 :)

Or if you don't want to go fast in a 90 you could consider and ex-mil 90 with the 2.5 naturally aspirated non-turbo engine!!!

Thats the engine in my series :! We have a 90 with one of them as well, faster than walking :D

yeah i have one in my 90, its actually a great engine, i drive mainly b and a roads in it and its fine for pootling around at 50, easy peasy to service, i can get in the engine bay with it lol

yeah it is only slightly better than walking, the only negative is the lack of PAS!!
 
I'd probably by a 90 if i was buying a first proper landy again.

I own a series 3 and will probably be getting a 90 soon!
 
You really need to drive both before you decide. They are both great fun but different. £5k will get you almost any series 3, and a nice 90

If it were me though I would pick a 90 as it is more capable , although the character of a series is quite tempting especially a 2 or a 2a
 
If you get a 2 or 2A or even an early series 3 you don't have to pay road tax ;) I do though, 3 years out :(
 
At least its in the right direction :) Just need to jump to 1976 and I'll be happy :D

Back to the OP's question, have you thought of an ex- MOD 90 FFR, they're usually maintained well and look pretty cool :) You can get ex-MOD ones fairly cheap, ours cost around £800 but that needs work doing to it (chassis, bulkhead etc. )
 
Or at the other end of the scale I got a ex-mod for £4k +VAT and apart from a tiny patch and a pinion oil seal and service items it's been superb. It's a H plate and had a better chassis than some defenders 10yearz younger!

It's got new engine, gear box and transfer box in 2008 and loads of other new bits - everytime I fiddle with it i find a new 'new' part.
