Hi,
I have a series 3 2.25 petrol and I suspect I have a chipped tooth on first gear as it is making a loud rattle when in first. What is the best thing to do?
Get a recon box or?

Recon boxes can be a bit variable as parts quality gets worse. But I bet if you rebuild yours there will be more parts required than just first gear.

I would rebuild which isn't too hard if you're reasonably methodical. Or get someone with a proven record to do it, for example...

how confident are you , its not rocket science but you need to follow the manual and or advice, i think youll find you need more than 1st but you wont know till its stripped , i can tell you anything you need to know as you go along if you wish to have a go,theres not much better than fixing your own stuff

could not agree more - we did 1st and 2nd synchro on our SIII donkeys years ago, and it was very satisfying.
( the old unit is still in the workshop too !!)

I have done mine twice in 220.000mls get a gen L/R manual its quite clear...quality part maybe a prob.

My mate has had his does by professionals???? twice in 6 months...its still a bag of poo.
