I thought I'd better do some topping up. The main gearbox took about 1 1/2 pints. But when I took the level/fill plug out of the transfer box, oil poured out. Is it possible the oil has leaked from main to transfer box? If so, is it serious, and how hard is it to fix?

Try a search, the seals need replacing both boxs out.
Depending how long it takes to fill the transfer box, from the gearbox oil, may just be worth putting up with it and draining/filling as you have every six months or so.

it is possible to do gearbox rear seal from t/box with box in vehicle but requires special tool making in form of tube with end wide enough for pushing seal in ,but as said unless emptying gearbox rapidly just keep an eye on it

Right, many thanks for your advice. I really need to fit new seals to the swivel housings as top priority, so I'll drain the excess from the transfer box for now, and monitor regularly. :)
