I am thinking of putting a second battery in parallel with my existing battery so it charges at the same time and to give me a but of extra oomph when needed for cold starts and running the winch.

Is this practical?

Only if you actually do it........if you dont its merely theoretical

do it properly and fit a split charge system

Thought it might be a split charge. Was just trying to save the wiring.....
