I went to veiw a Discovery Td5 today and checked all usual things like the chassis, airbags etc.

When I took it for a test drive she ran fine but every time the car came to a stand still and then accelerated through the gears there was a load screeching noise coming from the engine and it was intermittent to.

I have done a search on the site and found a few answers saying it could be the inlet manifold gasket.

Does anyone think it can be anything else ?

It didn't sound like belts it was to high pitched and it didn't seem to lose any power, basicly you would set of in first and when you got to about 2500 revs it would make this high pitched screech all the way through the gears until you reached about 50mph and then it would disappear, so in other words it only happened when you accelerated and by intermittent i meant ie when we got to the next round about and set of again there was no noise.
Hard to explain.

My guess,based on the limited information, is the drive belt tensioner pulley or one of the other pulleys on the alternator, power steering etc.

The simple way to eliminate is to remove the belt and drive it.

You will lose power steering, cooling, and alternator but hopefully you can get the idea quick enough, start with a cool engine and you will get around 5 minutes before you'd want to be replacing that belt!

I'd say it's a warped exhaust manifold. Check for soot where it joins the head.

+1,if its only preset when accelerating that would be my guess too

I had this type of screech when I had had my clutch replaced. Turned out that the mechanic had not used the phosphus (?) bronze bush (99p) when doing the work so he had to start again and was not a happy boy, but it certainly worked properly afterwards.

pop the belt off & spin and manipulate all the pulleys, you will soon know if it is one of them they should run free & no noise.
had the same problem this weekend with my td5 defender belt tensioner schreechig its nads off, did as above found it straight away if its the belt pulley you have to buy the whole thing.
But you can just change the pulley the bolt comes out clockwise.

Thanks for all the help it was indeed the exhaust manifold, two of the studs had broken too apparently this a common problem with the manifold getting hot, we got the two studs helicoiled so jobs a good un
