Planning on going up to Scotland with the wife at the end of Feb. It'll be the longest trip we've had in the Defender, but fancy getting it out n about.

The wife has an Evoque, which would be far more sensible to take due to fuel and general comfort, but where's the fun in that?!?:D

The plan so far:

  • Sunday - Set off from Derbyshire to Cumbria (overnight at 'glamping' site) 173 miles
  • Monday - Drive to Glencoe (stay at Kings House) 199 miles
  • Tuesday - Drive to Skye (two nights but not booking anything) 103 miles
  • Wednesday - Explore Skye
  • Thursday - Drive to Loch Lomond (stay in hotel) 149 miles
  • Friday - Drive to Penrith (stay in another 'glamping' site) 169 miles
  • Saturday - Drive Home 160 miles

Any thoughts on this?

We are going to be taking a small stove (lunches in the open), sleeping bag etc

Also, are there any extras that we should be taking? What about a small plastic fuel container?

Love to hear your thoughts.

Sounds like a good trip. Just plenty of cash is all youll need, places up north tend to rip tourists off. There are certainly plenty of fuel stations around but it never hurts to have a jerry can to hand just in case. I cant vouch for skye though, never been.

If your interested too you could get the ferry over to Arran, its a fantastic beautiful place and quite often described as Scotland in miniture i believe.

Glencoe is quite desolate but interesting all the same, saying that i was cycling through so didnt really get a chance to stop for some sightseeing. But while youre in that region i would highly recommend a meal in the Bridge of Orchy hotel which isnt far from the Kings House.

Oh and take some warm clothes cos itll be damn bloody cold ;)

jerry can for fuel +one for Water for coffee. 10ltrs is a good size and can bu used in rad/screen wash etc. washing up bowl (Collapsible is good).. :D If it's a gas "picnic" stove. Take plenty of gas cartridges as they don't last long. Don't forget the frying pan  You might want to take some basic spares for the Landy, ALT/PAS Belts, set of wheel bearings/seals. Then even if you get a Garage to change em. At least your not hanging around waiting for them to be delivered.

We're pretty adept at the camping thang, so should be good in terms of our current equipment for that.

With regards to the Landy, Wheel bearings? am I likely to need them?!? and just one, or a set of four?

Where do you stop with carrying spares?

One wheel set should be enough. so 2 bearings and a seal. get timkin. bearings.

Well a spare vehicle would be the ideal scenario. :D But generally oils, oil & fuel filter and consumables usually suffice n the UK. The reason I mention Wheel bearing is that due to you been a fair distance from large towns for a lot of your trip. something as simple as a failed bearing or snapped alternator belt. could mean been stuck for a full day or even till the following day waiting for parts to arrive. Whereas if you take a few spares. The garage can do the job there and then, and have you on your way within an hr.

Why not come over to the islands? Instead of 2 nights in Skye head across to Lochmaddy, go round the west side of North Uist then head up to Berneray and get the ferry across to Harris stay there over night, head up to Stornoway the next day and get the ferry back to Skye. If you could add on an extra day for over here there's plenty to explore, chocolate factory, whiskey distillery, Harris Tweed mill, local arts and crafts, depends what you find interesting really. There's a load of new MTB trails in the castle grounds, plenty peat roads to go get muddy on too.

Skye is just a wet, orrible bog hole. Thats just in the summer mind..

Aye, that's why I was thinking 2 days there would just be a waste of time really. Between visiting friends and passing through, to say I've been there 100 times probably wouldn't be an exaggeration really and I can only remember once it didn't rain.

Just do one night on Skye and do the other one in Oban, either on way there or back..Penrith aint got much to offer either so you might be better coming back down the west coast and staying in Galloway on your last night..
