Hey guys,

This is probably a very stupid, over asked question, but I can't seem to find a direct answer

So I have a fair bit of rust, from what I can see, surface rust, on my landrover, door corners, rear bench seats, misc areas, some where the hood locks down, door handle area, etc places where rain can get and accumulate, is this really anything at all to be concerned with?

It's a 1985 ex-mod 110 defender

post up some photos so we can see. there is rust then there is 'rust' if you see what i mean

Will post some tomorrow, pitch black outside and don't have flash on my camera, it seems very light, another slight concern I had was with my battery box, it has loads of holes that directly look to outside, they look like they should be there if that makes sense? Is that a concern? I have a photo of that, also in the photo, the rust you see is what all the rust I describe is like, however I will take some photos tomorrow

your battery box looks great, whats under the battery like? Mine has those exact holes and they open to the air, they are for venting out gases released by car batteries so it doesnt go in the cab.

there are also drain holes under the battery.

that surface rust on the seats i wouldnt worry about, any rust at first try wirebrushing it back with a wire brush on a drill, or use a flap disc on a grinder then use some phosphoric acid (jenolite) on any stubborn bits and then paint with some anti-corrosive paint (hammerite etc)

if any bits develop holes then they will either need welding, or depending where it is you can cut the rust out and rivet a plate over the top

Alright great thanks!

I have some phosphoric acid here actually, and a can of hammerite anti corrosive primer, and a can of NATO OD Spray paint, so I just need wire brush and I should be set, do I need to dilute the acid? and do i just put it on a spray bottle or?

you probably do, i think the stuff i had was 40% phos acid? Just brush it on outside in a well vented place, wear eye and skin protection!

Sounds like a good plan, still get some pics up though so the severity (or not) can be assessed.

If it helps my ex-mil 90 had a lots of surface rust on things like seat brackets, spare wheel mount etc aswell

If you were closer you could have just looked at mine and that would have gave you piece of mind! More crust than a 70yr old brothel worker!
