It can be done but you would need a new instrument pack and BeCM.
A slightly different method of doing it would be a new instrument pack and have someone with a Rovacom/Faultmate that has the direct CPU access module unlock the existing BeCM and change the mileage back to zero. Then reinstall BeCM and new instrument pack and voila, 0 miles showing.
To be honest I don't see why you would want to do this unless you had some sort of dodgy reason. Not only that, a Rovacom/Faultmate already costs quite a bit, add that to the fact you would need the direct CPU access module which costs even more and finally a new instrument pack its not even worth doing.

The direct access module from Rovacom is nearly a grand. There is an Eprom in the Instrument pack and the mileage is "Burnt" on to it. If a second hand Instrument pack is fitted the BECM will default to the highest figure, so if the pack has say 90k on it and the BECM 50k the mileage will show 90k and the BECM update to this figure.

I don't think it's actually illegal until you use the new reading to try and mislead someone about how many miles the vehicle has travelled, but why else would you want to do it?

You are dead right.
With the computerisation of M.O.T.'s (In the U.K.) mileage is logged on the database anyway and after all you are only kidding yourself. Why do people want to make the car what it isn't?-a P38 that is supposed to be an Autobiography, Holland & Holland or L322 by fitting loads of bolt on stuff from the likes of Egay etc. at great cost. Why not go out and buy the real thing if you want one that bad? Takes me back to the days of "Boy racers" buying an ordinary Ford Escort and spending a fortune making it look like an XR3i yrt only having a 1300cc engine under the lid!!!!
I imagine your right.If you clocked a car then kept it no one apart from the mot tester would know, but to knowingly sell a car with incorrect milage is probbably the illegal bit.Fairly silly question in the first place I cant think of any other reason to clock a motor either!?

Touch of "Poser" here-fancy telling people "I have a 1997 Range Rover with only 700 miles on the clock"-bit sick really considering the tyres have probably got only 1mm of tread left and the drivers seat is sagging. What are they trying to prove??

My Ser III has had at least 4 (sh) speedos in the last 20 years I've owned it, as well as several periods with no working speedo, so I haven't as clue what the correct mileage is. Does that mean I can never sell it?

Of course not. When the speedo packs in that's fine as long as the reading on the new one is not used to specify the true mileage of the car to a buyer. The drift of the topic, I understand is to have the speedo. reset for reasons of "Vanity" to try and kid yourself that 50000 looks better than 150000. Can't get my head around people that want something to be what it's not and will pay a fortune for it. Still, it's everyone to his own I say-if it turns them on!!!

I would be inclined not to believe her, thats not to say it couldn't happen, im sure it could but ive spent wayyyyy too much time on LR forums since Ive owned my P38 and never seen any such reported problem.
I own one of Blackbox Solutions Faultmate systems and have access to their tech forums and have also never seen a report of such a thing happening there either.
I would love to see proof of it doing so, would be interesting to figure out why.
