I've had a second rad in the garage for ages, its not in great condition, but its better than my current one which has no fins on the back.. uppss!!!

Never had any problems though as I dont drive it during the summer and in the winter the heating is always blasting so the temp gauge never go over a quarter part the middle...

but I think now its time to change.

I was looking for a how to on replacing the rad, but cant find anything? Im sure I've seen it before, i think buster had done one, but cant find it?

Suspect its not that difficult, just a matter of disconecting all the hoses and then refitting the new rad..

but its handy to have a how to.
also, when filling it up with coolant, any special one to use? any colour will do?
also, I guess its a case of filling the rad to the top, filling the expansion tank and then let the engine run for a bit and then check the level on the expansion tank?

200 or 300 ,but either remove viscous fan lh thread wacking spanner with hammer is better than straght pull ,remove fan cowl, undo 4 x bolt usually 13 mm spanner size on top rad frame and remove ,undo bottom hose 6mm socket or 7mm if replaced with proper hose clips ,water runs out better with cap off ,remove top hose,rad bleed pipe, 2 x oil cooler pipe 15/16 or 24 mm spanner hold pipes vertical to stop some oil loss ,wiggle out rad if 300 get 2 brass plugs 1 for 200 as they need to be out for refilling ,oat coolant will do nicely
 
cheers James, my doubt is really about the refilling and making sure everything is working as it should with no bubbles...

dont need to remove fan on mine and there's no cowl, its a 200 off a disco, but its so far back against the bulkhead that there is loads of room at the front between the fan and the rad..

main doubt is the bleeding
 
the nearly do it temselves just fill to rads full replace bung and fill till tank is excess will come out of cap harmlessley till correct level found

Do I have to use any special coolant? or any from halfrauds will do?

also..another question!

my 90 has a disco engine, but im not sure if the rad is off a disco or a 90, I think there's some differences? is it the height or something?

actually, looking at this, they are all the same? as its a sale to fit disco or defender...

I might just get a new one, had a look at the other one i have in the garage and there's loads of fins missing at the front of it.

Does anyone know if there's a place that does the exchange with rads so you buy a new one cheaper? like done with gearboxes?

same rad the only bits that are age related are cooler pipe unions but are swappable, disco rad frame is different to defender as disco locators underneathe sit on inch pedastal defender doesnt OAT is what most use now lasts longer and protects more from corrosion etc ,
 
I did the rad on my 300tdi 110 earlier this year, while I can't remember exactly what order or indeed exactly what I did, :confused::confused::confused:. I do know I didn't take the fan off, and even for someone who hasn't got a bloody clue:doh::doh: I do remember it being pretty straight forward:D:D IIRC I got told at the time not to use OAT coolant, but can't remember who or why they said so.

ho right! I'll only know when i get it out then..

So if the disco rad sit on an inch pedastal, if i get a disco rad, I can just cut an inch off the pins and it will fit?

or is it not as simple as that?
 
no rad sits in frame with intercooler ,frames are different rad inside frame the same undo 4 bolts holding top of frame pull out rad fit other,if your frame was disco its already been altered to suit

I get it now! duhhhh, of course, the difference is on the frame (like you said earlier), the rad is the same, disco or defender, it will sit on the frame I have, no matter if it has been modified or not... its there, that's what matters lol

Gents, quick one as I'm about to fit the new rad

I've heard or read somewhere that when taking the oil pipes you have to retrieve o-rings or something like that?

Mine didn't have any o-rings or washers or anything...neither does the new one, do I have to fit any or just thightning it up will be enough?

Should be there mate, very small and often difficult to see cos of oil...or they fell off when you took old ones off!
 
Have a butchers in the adaptors that bolt to the rad normally stuck in there but defo refit with o rings if not there.
 
are they just like normal rubber O rings?

I cant really find them, I was carefull when I took both pipes off and had my hand underneath and nothing came off...
also looked inside once I got the rad out and there was nothing there..

wtf...Im sure there wasnt any in there
 
right.. definately 100% there wasnt any O rings in there.

I've just been out to check again, nothing on chassi rail, nothing on the tarpaulin I had underneath and nothing inside the mix of coolant/oil in the bucket that was underneath..

took this pics though...

this is the old rad, as you can see the connector is curve and matches the shape of the oil pipe.

Here you can see the shape of the oil pipe (that matches the connector on the old rad) and also the new connector on the new rad, which is not curve and has a little step...
I guess the O ring should sit on that step?
