I have a set of top bushes that have perished really badly, so it's time to replace. Looking at the them they look like it will be virtually impossible for push into the top of the shock absorber. The look like two rubber cones, joined together and fixed to a metal tube. The top of the shock is the opposite to offer a 'snug' fit.
I can see that I could hack-saw the old one out, but the heck do you get the new ones in???
 
they come in 3 parts, two conical bushes that you push in one from each side and then the metal insert that goes through the middle. its better to replace them with polybushes as they last longer and give a firmer ride. its easier to fit them if you spray them with wd40 first ;)

Aha! Your description of the parts is not like the part I have, ie my two cones and tube are all one piece!....am I looking at an impossible job?
 
you are not seeing the wood for the trees,the easest way to get the ld bush out is to either burn it out, but some people comsider this to be dangerous otherwise you can drill through the rubber with lots of small holes then join the holes together, it is probably as i described but the rubber has fused together over the years.

Thanks, the drilling idea wasn't one that occured to me.

But the parts I was describing as two cones joined and fixed to the tube were the new ones just purchased, not the old ones I am trying to get out. Hence much scratching of head as to how the beggars will fit into the top of the shocks.

Any ideas? :confused:
 
the easiest way in that case then is to get a jubilee clip and put it over the wide bit of the one cone, tighten it up until the cone is small enough to go in the hole then place it over the hole(make sure its lined up perfectly ) then lump it with a hammer, once its in, undo the jubilee clip and take it off. if its a rubber bush use wd40 on it but dont use oil or grease as it affects the rubber ;)
 
be warned, it won't be plain sailing, it never is with a landy, but let us know how youi gt on ;)
 
this is an easy job, lube it up with plenty of wd40, put a crow bar in a vice with the point sticking up, put the shock and bush into the point of the crowbar and lever the shock upwards, the bush will come out easy.

to refit, again use plenty of wd40 and squeeze it in with the vice
 
rustyclutch, the top bush is fitted inside the round mounting on the shocker, i know what you are talking about but that is the bottom mounting, no offence meant buddy ;)
 
Went for the clutchdust and Yella Disco compromise....drilled around the old beggar and they slipped out dead easy. Used a bucket of WD and a stonking great big vice and the new ones flew in.

I even had time to change the choke cable and exhaust rear pipe before it rained, as it always does in Derbyshire.
