I have now picked up my TD5 (2001) and notice the rear lighting arrangement os totally different from my 300tdi. i.e. sidelights only light in the rear bumper which also inlude the rear fog lights, and the flashers and brake lights are in the higher up lights. Is this right or has the wiring been tampered with.

No what you have is correct. There are variations with the D2 rear light setup as there was with the D1, all depends on the model year.

2001 should have fog and indicator lights in the rear bumper. Post facelift models had fog and reverse lights in the rear bumper, with the indicators moved up to the higher lights.

It is possible to convert the older style to the newer and it seems that this is what has been done to your Disco.

Thanks guys, I will stop being a road hazard now as I have been keeping an eye out for TD5's just to see the rear lights lit up.
