Three seals if it's a fl1. However most of the times the two seals are leaking rarely the 3rd.
Two sideways on driveshafts, one middle on propshaft side.
 
Have got them and some rear diff mounts have fetched Freelander 1 with propshaft removed drives now with no noise underneath and drives quite well.Is there anyway to tell if the IRD is in reasonable condition.
 
Any reason given as to why it was removed?

Change the oil. If it comes out grey, then the IRD is fubar. If it comes out black, then it might be ok.
Removed because of whining noise underneath and the prospect of damage to the IRD or Differential possibly VCU knackered .
