Hi All

I am new to the site and not sure if anyone can help.

I have a 56 plate Freelander TD4. Approx 65k on clock, and i have had it for a couple of years.

It has developed a terrible rattle which effects the whole car at 50+ mph. The steering wheel, gear stick and whole car will judder violently. The car is still good on power and i have tried driving through the problem e.g 70+ mph but it doesnt go. Once i lift off the power the car appears fine.

I have installed a new prop, viscus coupling, IRD box and now gear box. The problem has not gone and if anything appears worse.

I ran it in 2 wheel drive for a short while to try and diagnose the problems and it was fine.

Any ideas folks??

was the old VCU, or IRD actually knackered? If so, the last link in the chain is the rear difff, it can be effeccted by a dead VCU, and would probably not cause a problem in 2WD.

I think the tyre problems would have to be quite extreme for the symptoms you describe, and don't see why they would stop when you took the power off.

Just had to take 2 tyres off a freelancer that was shaking itself to bits above 50mph.

Mew tyres and it's sweet

Any visual distortion, or odd tread wear on this? How did you know which two tyres to remove? Or did you get lucky with the first pair?

I've had to take tyres off cars in the past, but only ever when they had a problem I could see, the concept of something being so tyre sensitive it can have problems with no visuals on a tyre is pretty far out to me

I'm also out to learn as much as I can as quick as I can in case it happens to the wife's

It had an element of stepping on the tread blocks, it was this that might have been causing the avderse harmonics.

Swapped tyres front to back and noise largely went away (noise was originally rear Propshaft and floor shake)

Took a set of wheels off another vehicle and it was perfect.

Took a semi guess an replaced two tyres that were now on the front and all sorted.

We were kinda suprised too tbh!

Have seen an 09 plate scirocco with stepped inner tread blocks and owner complaint of humming sound.

Freelander was worse due to vibrations getting out of hand in Propshaft, perhaps slightly worn support bushes?

Could be teaching granny to suck eggs, have you checked out the VCU? What I've read on here suggest this could cause the stepping on the rear tyres.

Tbh mate no, Perhaps not thoroughly. It was a car we had in at work.

It had a new rear diff fitted though, looked brand new.

My guess? Bad noise, previous owner has new diff fitted, noise still there, trade car in.

Either way I jacked rear wheel and I did have rotation in the rear wheel so it wasn't seized, nor was it completely loose so seemed ok. Wasn't lumpy on reversing either, but who knows.

Car has new tyres and is ok, that's all I ever got to see of the problem.

But maybe there is some connection? Either way definitely worth checking tyres if you have Freelander vibrations!
