Hi People

I have a Freelander TD4 2.0 Diesel

This is a new one when is turn on the blower for the heating I get a vibration rattle from which seems to come from the engine on the drivers side. With the blower on in pretty much any mode and any speed around the 1800 RPM mark. If I rev above or below by 100 rpm or so... the rattle dissapears.

When I hold the reve around 1800 rpm and turn the blower off the vibration rattle dissapers.

The rattle reminds of when I had similar sound with a metal exhaust maifold cover the one of the bolts rusted away caused a similer rattle.

Any idea's On Points you landy guru's

Hello there

My 2006 TD4 is doing exactly the same thing. Its not that loud and is only present when idling or at low revs as you describe. The longer you leave the blowers on, the worse it seems to get. Sounds like a bag of spanners after a long drive.

Has anyone worked out how to fix this? Just thought I'd ask before I start pulling things apart.

The rattle seems to start as soon as the extra electrical load is put on by the blowers. However, if I turn everything else electrical on to increase load, it doesn't do it.

Any ideas??

Check you crankshaft pulley - sounds like it could be on the way out

Thanks td4van. I thought it might be that. If it was would it do it all the time? With the blowers off it runs sweet as you like. I used to have a Mazda Bongo that made a similar noise, turned out to be the pulley on the AC compressor. Will get the cover off and take a look.

what setting do you have the air direction on ? if its set to point at the windscreen, this will automatically bring the air conditioning on which...

can cause the pulley to rub on the plastic shield in the wheel arch on the drivers side if the shield is misaligned

Thanks very much for that, have just been out and had a look. The noise is certainly worse when the blowers point at the windscreen.

Having thought about it some more the noise only started after we had a tow bar fitted. I assume when it was fitted they would had to take the wheel arch liner off to get at the back of the fuse box to wire in the electrics, they may have moved something.

All the pulleys look ok and I can't see any "glitter" on the side of the engine. As soon as you give it some revs it stops, when the engine goes back to idle its quite loud for a second or so, and is then quite faint. Definately sounds like something rubbing or vibrating against something else.

Will keep an eye on it.

Just though I'd post an update on this, have managed to find and fix the problem. It turned out that the battery was on the way out. Noticed that the lights were dimming when running the blowers so replaced the battery.

Now the new battery is in and the rattle / clatter has completely gone. I guess as the battery was low on power the alternator was having to work the belt hard cuasing the noise. Could have been the belt knocking on the splash shield.

Either way, all sorted. Thanks all for the advice.
