hi miles . . .less your 80% sure its yer bearing carry on ,few done it as diy jist go in search, but if ya not sure undo ya prop un go two wheel drive for a bit , then check ya noise out ,could help pin it for ya, , ,un the play int bearing should all be bout the same, but centre normally go's first, all bearings wear wif time but as long as not too much all is fine, when it starts getting bad oil seals keep blowin ,unless things like wheel bearings. . . .best oh luck. . .
ere Minge which prop bearing needs the prop changin? I know when one of mine went - they had to change the prop complete

good question ,well this is why a sid 80%sure startin from ird[front] front cv,front prop ,uj in vcu housing , vcu, nuffer uj in vcu housing,rear prop rear uj , into the fdu. . .now any one of these can go not forgitin front ird seal un bearing ,and rear fdu seal or bearing , so by takin out rear prop and noise reduced by aprox 50% [no load on vcu] fault is along lenth vcu to ird , noise still loud then problem on rear end. . .so you can see this is not easy to pin point, so you also look for play in all joints and make a hazard gestomate , in the past ive played this game ,and worn bearings made less noise than the culprit one's , noise under load is the hardest of all, less yer got er 4 wheel rolling road in ya tool box . . .ere Minge which prop bearing needs the prop changin?
Thanks Ming. Coming back to UK soon and need a few parts for disco so figured I would go for centre bearings as a first shot. Won't have time before going to run 2 wheel drive so am prepared to take pot luck. It had one rear diff support bush gone when I bought it - (knock against chassis syndrome) so good chance of centre bearing?

bin on that moonshine agin. . .well flops ole m8 orft top of ma head aboot 350-400 gbp thats fer the td4 the v6 as you know was more robust, there was some chaps doin recons fer 250 on flea bay dunt know how good they are. . .why do you ask? . . .changin subject bin in touch wiff old engineering earth pals aboot fluid drives [to do away wiff the vcu and auto/elect cut in] and as yet they are all to big , but one old guy reckons he could do away with the props keep the vcu in place and switch in a fluid drive. . .great i thought but cost jist too exspensive ,and so not worth it. . .still lookin, by the bee ,fluid drive is a simular principle to vcuere Minge - how much is a new vcu? Rite then ! I've come across these ere thingys before! Warner Electric - clutches, brakes and power transmission components for industrial applications and i know the'll cope will all that torque the hippo put out
I recon you'd just need to fabricate an enclosure to house em in and with the right input / output fer the props to couple up to
I recon the physical size wunt be far off the same as the vcu !

The slitty has an electrically operated rear clutch mounted on the front of the rear diff - if this could be fitted into the Hippoo drive train - this wud give a SWITCHABLE 2/4wd system
but i can see some peeps wouldnt want it if it came from a Nissan - hoy Minge?
