Fitted that 2.5 NA (Sherpa one) to my series 3, seem to have the timing sorted now, she runs well, cruises at 50, still gutless on hills etc, starts fine, ticks over sweet, bit of black smoke when she is pulling, nothing drastic.

BUT....

Go downhill on an over run, say at 55 - 60, and sometimes all hell breaks loose, heavy clattering, smoke (Blue/white) Have to let her slow down to a point when normality returns, and the engine returns back to normal. Not blowing oil, not using water, not overheating. Any thoughts???

sounds like the vacuum advance (yeah - i know :() is advancing yo timing by too much.

ok normally then when on overrun - vacuum increases and that alters timing by too much. - seem reasonable?

Guess so.....

I did not mention it was a diesel did I...

Could it be anything to with the fact the vacumn pipe to the servo has been blocked off as my series aint servo assisted, just a thought.

I have a gut feeling this is going to turn in a engine prob though, perhaps bottom end.

What would be causing the smoke? unburnt diesel as in timing...

The 'normal' smoke is a black colour almost like soot, only when she is pulling hard (Well as hard as a Landy can pull anyway)
