P38 Thor
Hi
I am currently changing the interior of my P38 so It has involved a fair amount of recolouring work. All; has gone great until refitting the glove box. Fitted the damper and hinges and closed it. Now it will not release even after a lot of quiet contemplation and shouting!!
Any helpful ideas would be very welcome.
Cheers
Simon?

My glovebox has a switch, when you press it the glovebox opens
Key goes in it can lock it.
I forgot to preload the switch before reinstalling and once shut pressing it wouldn’t open the glovebox
and of course the screws to take it back off to set the switch are inside

I fell into same trap a few years ago when re-fitting my dash. If I remember correctly, it involves unbolting the hinges again, and the whole thing drops far enough to access the latch from behind. Not a lot of room and a pain to reach though.

Or try pulling the fake wood trim above the glovebox, to see if there's wiggle room to free the latch with a screwdriver ?

I had to get a big scraper (strong metal strip) put a rag over it not to take chunks out of the facia, then bend it down enough to get to the screws one at a time.

I seam to remember doing the same on mine, had to unscrew the hinges to get to the top, a right pain in the aris:rolleyes:

The other thing to watch on re-assembly is the routing of the shrouded cable -since the lock works by tension if you get the routing wrong it can render the lock inoperable. May not be the problem here, but if you've removed the cable and are then replacing it be sure to test the button before closing it all up

OK thanks to all. Followed the detailed instructions on that link and it worked like a dream-have now got a glove box back! Was able as well to address the bunged up condensation overflow.....see my next post!
