Your pump's gone - I had this on my wife's TDi 300. Easy quick fix. Bought the pump from Paddocks at about £45 plus 3+ltrs of pas fluid and the jobs done.
Her steering never felt so good afterwards.

You will be loading the top half of the steering system much, much more than normal, so there is a danger of something braking.
But the real danger will be the lack of immediate steering. What I mean is that when there is plenty of time and space to do the steering manoeuvres - no problem. But if something needs to happen quickly to avoid a crash, you could be in trouble.
I drove Wend's car when the pump went only for a day or so, and I felt like I was very nearly caught out a couple of times.
Seriously mate, don't do it, you might hurt yourself or perhaps an innocent bystander.
Your choice of course.......................................

That's a very wise decision - and to be honest once you have the new pump and fluid it's a max one hour job, very straightforward.

morning folks, I've got a shiney new power steering pump to fit today but I've a couple of questions if i may. In the haynes manual it says I need to get under the car and have it on axle stands to remove the pump, do I really or can i do it all from above. Also I'd like to replace all the fluid in the system so how do I drain all the old stuff out ? ta muchly.

you dont need to ,once pulley is off ,undo 4 x 10mm headed bolts holding pump plate to aluminum housing and pull pump forward ,undo the 2 pipes , if you want to change oil ,put a rubber pipe on opened bleed nipple on box to drain tin and keep filling reservoir ,while someone rotates steering wheel ,your done when oil runs clean

The way I replaced the fluid was, once the new pump was on and fully connected, I got a length of clear plastic pipe sufficiently long to go from the bleed nipple on top of the steering box to a container to catch the fluid.
I opened the bleed nipple and ensuring that the steering wheel was in the straight-ahead position, I started the engine. This pumps the oil out at a manageable rate - DO NOT TOUCH/MOVE THE STEERING WHEEL WHILST DOING THIS.
I had pas fluid ready and kept topping up up the reservoir until I could see need fluid coming out the other end.
You will need approx 3.2ltrs of fluid to do this completely.
