Evening, All.

There is a transmission related noise being emitted by my Defender that I'm puzzled by. The Defender is a 1993 200 tdi with LT77 gearbox, all as standard.

The noise occurs if I lift off the accelerator sharply, but not during acceleration or gentle lift off. It sounds like a sharpish clack.

So far I have replaced many of the usual suspects, so A Frame ball joint and bushes, drive members at the front, and the transfer box input gear and bearings.

Could it be as simple as the UJs? A local garage said they were ok and regreased them, but I had asked for them to be changed and the garage was pushed for time and said this was not necessary. I'm not convinced!

All thoughts gratefully received.

All the best,

Dom

Hi Dom,

Have you tried to move them manually?

Chock the wheels , in neutral and transmission brake off. See how the rotate, any looseness? Also check the spline.

If you can get the wheels off of the ground on axle stands even better.

Cheers

Thanks for that. I'll give it a go. I've got two spare props in good nick, so could swap them on, if necessary, and replace the UJs on the original props at my leisure!

The other thing you can try.

Put it in difflock and remove a prop. Drive it, then refit and remove the other one.

Cheers

I had similar and it was a bush onnone of the hockey stick arm things that locate the front axle. Might not be on yours but worth checking them?

Both props are now on. I fitted the rear one first. The car definitely drove better as a consequence, but the clack was still evident. I've just finished fitting the front prop and am about to head off to work. Fingers crossed the noise has gone, but I feel it may not have as there is play before drive is taken up if I rotate the prop. We'll see!

Right. Just got back in. As I expected, the clack is still there if I lift off the accelerator sharply. As I've now replaced both props, the A frame ballpoint and wishbone bushes, the front drive members and the TB input gear, I'm wondering if the front diff is worn, or the front half shafts, for that matter. The garage did the TB input gear and commented the output shaft from the gear box was worn, so that might be it.

What do you think?
