I can offer some advice. Buy a 2.5 litre V6 Freelander with 39k miles on it. Nearly 6 years old but can be yours for £6000. Photos in the gallery 
Not sure what the TD4 is like on the money sucking front. I do hear good rumours though. Good engine for instance. If you want brutal accelaration and a lovely sounding power plant get the V6 though Photos in the gallery !!!
