Hi all,
Just a quick one, I'm contemplating buying a series 3 88" that's fitted with a Perkins 4.203. Anyone know owt about em? Coz it's all new to me...
Cheers,
Jim
A great engine in its day, parts may be an issue now! ive had landys with them before. low bhp (about 60 at a guess) but tremendous torque c.150 ft lbs. Very low revving you wont get more than 45 on the road with standard gearing, Ashcroft transfer box improves it to 55 mph. A fantastic engine for off road use, and economical, 30+ mpg under any conditions. Some are mechanically governed, they come from forklifts, Dodge vans etc. Some from industrial applications have the hydraulic governor, both are OK but certainly not motorway cruisers! IF its in good nick and you look after it it will last for ever, if not,as I said, the parts may be hard to get now!
Yes, good quality oil, change oil and oil filter every 5000 miles. Fuel filter annually in normal conditions. Set the tappets every 10000, there is nothing else to do as this engine is all gear driven, no belts to change or chains to adjust. Bulletproof, economical motors but as before, very slow top speed with standard gearing
I think they are fitted to Dodge 50 trucks. There is a Dodge 50 Forum and a guy called Asif from Bradford (I think) breaks them. Wear ear defenders when driving it.
One of my mates at work has a similar set-up and he loves it, speaks about it with great passion and swears by the engine. I couldn't tell you which engine he has, but I know he would bite your arm off for another one.
