I was getting a single knock when turning either left or right. Currently changing both drag link and track rods for new heavy duty ones.

However, I now suspect the knock is coming from the mechanism where the drag link attaches to the steering mechanism (rather than ball joints as I previously suspected). I've got the car on axle stands and there is a clear wobble and metal knock when I shake it (the protruding metal bit) left to right even whilst steering wheel is locked. Can anyone tell me whether there is a bearing there or what I need to change? Ideally a part number?

Thanks in advance

presumably you mean the steering box drop arm, is arm loose on the splines, there will be some play in box unless its set central and there will be some play in the steering lock, get someone to rock steering wheel only an inch or so hard whilst you hold drag link you will feel were any play is then

Try adjusting the play out of the steering box.

Yes, steering box, there is definitely some play, probably only a few millimetres

Try adjusting the play out of the steering box.
I haven't managed to get a proper look of the mechanism as it is quite dark now and I've got poor light. Is it a simple matter of tightening some bolts?

box has to be central for it to have no play try as i suggested, steering lock doesnt lock the steering column solid it still has some rotation

On the top of the box you will see a locknut and adjuster. Put the car on stands and with steering centralised undo lock nut and screw adjuster in until you feel resistance then back off slightly. Turn steering full lock both ways, if there is ANY binding knock adjuster back a little until steering can be turned without any binding. Secure lock nut.

I've had a look in the engine bay and there is absolutely no easy access to the adjustment nut on a LHD model. I can't even get a line of sight to see the nut. Any ideas what the bare minimum is that I need to remove to get to it?

its arm to box. Wobbles when wheels are straight and also when at an angle (car is currently on axle stands and the wheels are off).

I don't 'mind' there being play. I get a quiet single knock when steering left or right but only at around 25mph or more. I was advised to change the drag link and track rod which I am currently in the process of doing. Having detached the drag link I checked the arm from the steering box and there is a wobble. I now think the knock is due to this.
