I hope you can help advise on my paintwork problem.

My '96 TDi in generally good body wise but the roof is horrible! The car is meant to be a dark green but the roof has white patches all over it that also feel quite rough (and before anyone asks, no it isn't bird s**t).

When it rains, the roof suddenly turns green again and shines but when it dries out, these marks appear all over one again.

I tried T-cut in a small area and although it made the surface feel smoother, it didn't help the marks.

Any ideas or suggestions (or explanations?)

Sounds like the clear top coat has been polished away.. May be time for a respray on the roof.
