Really stupid question, what is the best way/finish to paint a galvanised roof rack black? hammerite or spray can? The question sounds stupid by I have never painted anything galvanised before!

You need a galvanized specific primer then topcoat with whatever.
I seem to recall hammerite do or did do a galv paint.

You need to treat it with a "mordant t wash" before painting search ebay for some ;)
That's sort of old skool now I believe but it is how I did galv for years, in fact it's what I used for my galv chassis and bulkhead but a ready to use galv primer although more expensive, would be more user friendly for the op for what is really a small job.
Mordant is evil stinky stuff not really recommended for novice use imo.
Think I've still got some here somewhere about.

That's sort of old skool now............................

That's cause we are old skool lads & do things properly :D:D

I used black radiator enamel paint on my galvanised rear chassis rail, it looks really nice.
