Just wanted to know if there is any link between chipping and overheating problems. How many of you P38 diesel people with overheating problems have power chips? I'm one anyway!

I have a 'Powerbox' fitted to mine, absolutely NO DIFFERENCE to engine heat, it simply pulls better, & gives better MPG, however, it smokes more, so it gets unplugged at MOT time!!
There are several types of chipping, so obviously I can only comment on mine.

Hey modelman, I'm not suggesting it makes the engine run hotter, just that it might be over stressing older engines. I certainly wont be taking mine out or anything but when I get it back fom having the head done (I've ony just bought it, it came with the chip and has a genuine 70K on the clock) I will be doing a lot more wafting than tyre smoking and expect another 70K from the engine by not thrashing it.

I'm guessing that most people don't chip until the warranty is gone so therefore it is mostly older motors that are running chips. I'm guessing that if you chip it and thrash it its going to be expensive! Whereas if you chip it and just appreciate the improved driveability and economy it could be the start of a long and beautiful relationship.

The threads on overheating mostly seem to lead to head gasket problems. Its a bit chicken and egg to figure out which goes first the water pump/rad or gasket. I'm just wondering if running the older engines on a chip would lead them to overstress the gasket or is it the pump/rad is the root of the problem.

I suppose I want to hear the different driving styles of those who have and have not had a problem after chipping.
