right then the boss was driving the rangey today when she pulled up at her sisters it stalled and now wont restart. its a 2000my auto diesel, its stalled on me twice in the last month which is starting to worry me... anyhoo i went out and tried to start it this evening i'm getting no messages on the dash at all, it will crank all day long but not fire. i disconnected the fuel line into the filter and turned ignition on but no fuel came out till i cranked it. i removed relay 12 and shorted? across the terminals and hey presto pump in tank runs and puts out diesel BUT even when i put the pipe back to the filter with the pump running constantly it still wont fire, if i put the relay in and listen i cant hear the pump at all, its only audible with the terminals crossed. got me stumped now any ideas lads have to get my daughter 300kms on monday for an MRI scan :(
 
Pump only runs with heater plugs on. Whilst being cranked or when engine is running. Look at connections to crank sensor.
 
right then after talking to swmbo it turns out that the brother in law got it started with jump leads(prior to me going out and posting the opening post) but when she put it into D it wouldnt drive she floored it and it shuddered and cut out and wont start again. typical feckin woman not telling me everything that happened:doh::doh:

Think you may have a slightly larger problem than a crank sensor then.
 
thanks wammers!! no use asking for the lotto numbers then:D

went out this morning to it, turned the key let the glow plugs do their thing and after 7/8 churns it started!!(normaly 1/2 churns does it) however when i put it into D nothing happened, no drive, foot to the floor no rev nothing! dropped it into 1 and away she went but real sluggish compared to normal stuck it in D when rolling and she changes up and kickdown as normal just very sluggish, turning into our road i had to stop, it dropped into neutral (or whatever it does when you stop in D) went to pull away and again no revs at all no drive nothing let my foot off the accelerator and it shuddered and stalled and wont restart now? has me a bit stumped no messages on the dash at all.
 
would that not allow the engine to rev then? when it restarted it would rev freely in park or neutral just nothing when any of the gears were selected.

Sounds like you have a couple of problems. If there is a mechanical fail in box ECU won't know about it so no messages. It only knows about electrical fails. Next time you manage to start it see if it revs normally out of gear. Check connections to ECU temp sensor. If you have a problem with crank sensor, number four injector, engine check lamp should be on. Think you said you had removed feed from pump, check that all air is out of clear pipe filter to FI pump. Gearbox is another matter. Sounds a bit terminal to be honest. Unless your really handy with spanners.
 
it will rev normally in P or N. out of desperation i rang a garage that buys and sells range rovers over here and his mechanic said gearbox fine FIP is fubar'd :mad:
 
right its sorted!! turns out my wife put 15l of unleaded into yesterday when the fuel light came on. grrrrr thanks for all the replies and help
