I've been driving Opel Astra for 12 years, Ford Focus for 2 years, and
now i want something different... My offroad needs are minimal, I'm
mostly gonna need the car for town driving, but as i've just
explained, i'm kinda sick of the 'family' cars, and need something
that feels 'different'. I'm not a speed freak either.

So I'm seriously considering getting a 4x4 vehicle like 3d Grand
Vitara (1.6, ~22,000 euro) or 3d RAV4 (2.0, 32,000 euro). Besides the
1.6 - 2.0 difference, i know the RAV4 has a lot more in the basic
package (ABS, 8 airbargs, etc...)

Will the Grand Vitara be a good choice ? Or is it worth it to go for
the RAV4?

I own a 2002 Honda CR-V. This in Canada, but we have more or less the same
vehicles here. The main difference is that both the CR-V and the Rav4 get a
2.4l engines here.
Although the prices are comparable (in Canadian $):
CR-V 27000 - 32500
Rav4 24485 - 33550
Grand Vitara 24995 - 28595 (starting at 21000 for Vitara)
Suzuki is not considered to be in the same league that Toyota and Honda, it
is considered here as a discount Japanese brand.
You can clearly see this with the prices you're giving, there is a big
difference. It can be explained but a much better quality and reliability
record of Toyotas in general. I would never even consider buying a Suzuki
as, for me, they are comparable to Hyundai or Kia.
Now, the reason for which I bought the CR-Vis because it gas a sportier
engine and more cargo room than Rav4.

32k Euro for a RAV 4? HOLY ****! 32,000 euro is 40,000 US dollars. For that,
you could buy a Land Cruiser!

RAV4s (with the 6 banger) go for $25,000 and that is fully loaded!! You can
get a 4 banger one for $19,000

Are cars taxed that much? How can common folk take that kind of taxation?

In the US, I think RAV4s only come with a 2.4l 4-cylinder engine. Never heard of
one with a 6.

Dafinitly it is different leauge. RAV4 and CR-v are cars for city, GV
is typical off roader build on frame with T-case - low-ratio, Part
time 4WD (manual off course) , dependent back axle (inflexible). so
this car is not as comfortble as RAC or CRV, but is much beter in real
off road condition.
There is no central diff so 4WD cannont by used on asphfalt or solid
roads even during rain.
CR-V has VERY POOR 4WD, if it doesn't metter you can take it.
When I see you expiriences I advice you RAV4 it's the best chooise if
you ocasionaly only go off road.

You are correct. My mistake. The $25,000 figure was a fully loaded RAV4,
with every possible options.

You can make your own offroader to match a Rav or Crvs offroad
performance... Take a front wheel drive car with engine and gearbox that
sits sideways in the engine bay, sit it lengthwise in the bay with the wheel
shafts swapped for driveshafts to front and rear axles and open diffs with
longer suspension A arms and springs for extra ground clearance.

Viola! a RAV4 or CRV clone...

Actually the CRV drivetrain doesn't split the power quite that nicely :)

so make your own :) find a CRV with a munted engine and good chassis and
stick in a 2.5L turbo front wheel drive engine from one of the sportier FWD
model cars around in a wreckers with a good engine GB but munted body.... :)

Well at least in the US, we can just buy that car directly without engine swapping.
Subaru Forester XT, 2.5L turbo. I think 13.7sec 1/4 mile time stock (or so I'm
told)), which isn't bad for an AWD wagon. Can't you buy JDM Foresters in NZ,
which includes the even faster Forester STi?

Yup theres foresters and outbacks here in NZ, but the Subaru engines don't
have very good reputations for reliabilty and lasting. besides they cost the
earth!
They also have a lower suspension and body than the Rav and Crvs, they're
AWD cars with some bad terrain capability, the RAV and CRV are posermobiles
with the height and suspension to handle more terrain if they could just
find the traction!

I know of a guy who builds offroad buggies using toyota 1600cc twin cam
engines from the Toyo Levin sports cars and similiar on a box chassis single
seat 4wd frame. light, powerful and boasting Simex 33" trekker extreme tyres
they're real fun offroaders.
