Evening all,

I've spent the last few hours searching the archives and i'm 99% sure i've formed a decision......

My 1997 103,000 mile 300Tdi Auto ES is just about to go in for its MOT and i'm going to get my trusty mechanic to change the auto box, transfer box and diff oils.

I just want to double check the oils required:

My conclusions are, i think i have a ZF4HP22 box so need Dexron 3 (III) ATF for the auto box and a filter. It appears to hold 9 litres but even with the sump off to change the filter, they'll only get about 5 litres out.....?

The transfer box, centre and rear diff needs EP 80w90 and to do them all i'll need about 6 litres?

Are my conclusions correct? Are these the best options?

Also, whilst i'm on, we've done about 3,000 miles in the car since we bought it in August and i've noticed that on the motorway, the rear diff whines a bit. It's not the wheel bearings, it's definitely the diff. You can only hear it above 40mph. Under that speed, it's silent.

Do they all do that or do i need to start looking for a replacement in case it lets go? I'm not too worried to be honest as my 1993 Vauxhall Senator 3.0 24v Auto LSD whines above 50mph and has done for the past 50,000 miles and my 2000 Audi A4 2.5tdi Quattro does exatly the same and has done for the last 120,000 miles.

I don't deliberately keep buying cars with noisy rear diffs..... ha ha ha

Cheers,

Chris

Your oil and ATF is correct, EP is to GL4 spec for a D1 and fill to the level plugs and dip stick level.
And not they all don't do that :)
