If you are talking about the winch cable, then it must be steel. The only reason to oil a cable is to stop rust. If it's a stainless or galvanized cable they don't need to be oiled. Oiled cables are a mess to use, you will get it in your clothes and the inside of your lr. so just be warned.:D

Yes sorry I meant the cable, I didn't plan to spread oil over the whole thing! I'm pretty sure its galvanised (Britpart DB1200i), but one of my Landy owning mates commented the other day on how it would need some oil on it. Maybe he just wanted to say something manly about winches. I'll ask him.

If galvanized then don"t,if you do use veggie oil easier to clean up afterwards

Second Lynall's comment re: Ankor wax - much more 'fluid' than Waxoyl and easier to apply, with the added bonus that stuff doesn't have to be bone dry first

Just had a look at it: 5L 32 quid. And it's solvent with oil, so petrol+engine oil?
Petrol aires out, leaving oil in every gap or, with the wire rope, between the strands  and that for less than half the price

(thinking about the inside of my chassis)

the rope should be lubricated periodically, use a dedicated rope lubricant ( i use tiger rope lube but that's an industrial lube for crane ropes).
whoever says ropes shouldn't be lubed is wrong, the rope has a fibre core and the lubricant needs to soak into the fibre core to stop it drying out and breaking. the lube also lubricates between the strands where most of the wear is unseen.
don't use a petrol/oil mixture, it will rot the core.
veg oil absorbs water so thats useless too.

try this
Wire Rope Spray | ROCOL - Industrial Lubricants, Metalworking Fluids & Traffic Management

most branches of bsl carry it as stock or some engineers merchants.
(i've got 6 tins in the back of the van but that won't really help ya:D)

I just use engine oil on our cables at work. As long as it's been kept well lubed from day 1 you know that no moisture will get past it to rot the core.

Ankor wax actually says on the tin ideal for wire ropes
Dries semi tacky like waxoyl so shouldnt get on yor cloths
But saying that if you are winching you are dirty or about to get dirty anyway
I actually bought it for my chassis and its good stuff, then read the instructions about cables and thought i would try it
When its warm weather it just runs and soaks into the cable lovely
