Hello good folks of LZ,

I've managed to inherit a 1987 defender 90, which I plan to use for farm work. I've got a bit of mechanical savvy but I'm new to Land Rovers. Got an electrical issue and hoping someone here can help.

The old girl doesn't like starting too much - usually a fair bit of cranking required before she fires up. I've replaced the battery and could probably do with a new starter & solenoid in the near future. So I was cranking the thing over today and as it tried to fire it cut out and a loud whirring noise started and didn't stop - even with the key out of the ignition (possibly starter stuck on and spinning like a mad thing?). I had to disconnect the battery to shut it off.

When I went to reconnect the batt, the negative lead gave a big old snap on the terminal. Enough to make me think twice. I figured there must be something stuck on and running current through as I try to connect the batt. I disconnected the ignition switch and took out the starter relay but when I tried again (this time wearing thick rubber gloves and goggles), It went on with a spark but the whirring continued.

I'm pretty hopeless at troubleshooting electrical gremlins like this. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Could be solenoid on the starter motor is stuck engaged. If it is you can usually take it off and clean it up and itl be good.

Ask in 90 section is best. State year/model/engine give them a few clues.
