1988 Range Rovers dont have seperate amps. It will be the head unit that is not working.

The head unit is the actual radio/cdplayer/cassette etc what sit on the dash??

They are what ever you want to pay for one. You could pick up one from a boot sale for £2 Bongo Sound or pay £1000 for a Nakamichi. You may find an original Range Rover item (which I believe are re-branded Clarions) on eBay.
