I just bought a 2001 Freelander 2.5 V6 petrol auto as I stated in the "newcomer" section of this forum.
I do not care that much about no heat in cabin but, "missing Mass Air flow Sensor (MAF)" issue draws my attention pretty much.
When taking a look at the snorkel side (driver side in here), an 8 cm-diameter hose seems placed in this area without a MAF...As far as I know, engine would not be started without a MAF but, it runs good... A mechanic told me that there would not be a MAF in these year's engines. It seems so strange to me and I have been so confused when I have seen a video in YouTube related to the thermostat change versus other google images. That Freelander was 2003 with exactly the same engine and, there was a MAF in there obviously...
So, do you have an idea about MAF in my 2001 Freelander? Should there be a MAF in between the snorkel hose before the intake manifold next to battery? If yes, how this engine is running without a MAF, and where is the MAF located?
I will ask about "no heat in cabin with no rise of the needle in instrument cluster" issue in another thread... Probably bad thermostat or missing one again...

There's no MAF on the EU spec V6 Freelander. It doesn't need one as it uses throttle position, inlet air temperature and manifold depression to work out fuelling requirements.

As for you heater not working. That has a few causes. The most serious cause it combustion gasses in the coolant, from a failed head gasket. This is a common problem with the V6, especially if coolant level hasn't been maintained religiously. The KV6 engine will not tolerate low coolant. Coolant that is below the level of the tank will damage the head gasket instantly.
You need to bleed the cooling system and see how it goes.

If you have some pictures of how to connect the vacuum hose and other connections (if available) to the snorkel, because of previous owner's mechanic cancelled the vacuum hose and duck taped the vacuum end. At the same time, bottom of snorkel was torn and could not be fitted against even with a clamp.
I guess; the plastic cover on top of the engine could not be fitted in its place, just because of the vacuum lines next to the manifold were not placed well...
As per the heater, coolant does not smell like combustion gas and, the temperature gauge does not move when driving on the highway even though it moves up to the midway when driving in town traffic. For that reason, in my opinion, the culprit should be bad or missing thermostat...

Can you post a picture of what you have at the moment on the intake.

The thermostat could be faulty or someone has removed the guts from it. It's not possible to simply leave the thermostat out, as it's combined with the housing.

This is the complete pipe layout. I added the cone filter for some testing I was doing at the time.

This is the thermostat. It's located under the inlet manifolds.
The copper stuff is copper slip. It was put on previously, not by me. Silicone grease is the correct stuff for these joints.

I had the thermostat changed today...

And, the piping is just like that...

Even though the thermostat changed, I feel no difference in the temp gauge. As a change, now it it's rising up to 1/4 of the total dial and still no heat when driving on the highway whilst it's OK when city traffic... So, do you have an idea what the reason is for still no adequate heat in the cabin?
The heater matrix would be a problem if the temp gauge were rising up to the normal, in the middle of temp gauge... Now, what???
Do I have to put some cardboard in front of the radiator in winter time?
