Now the short days are descending my lights have decided to play silly buggers. When I move the light switch I get side lights and a dull glow from the halogen main bulb on both side. When I move it to the second position to bring on the dip beam I get only side lights, nothing from the main bulb.
High beam also isn't working but the flasher is

All fuses check as good, both the light switch and indicator/horn/high beam switch all appear to have good clean connections. Not sure where these circuits earth as that seems my next route. If any can steer me on the earth or has other better ideas please do pitch in

New switch, the contact has probably melted into the plastic case. Off with the column and have a look simple job. £30 for a replacement.

Thanks DJ. which switch is it you reckon could be at fault. The light switch or the indicator/high beam/horn?

I know when my head lights stopped working its was because the wire had come lose on the back of the fuse box itself.

IMHO, the switches aren't really up to switching the main/dip. Once a bit of dirt/dust gets in, you get arcing/burning.
If you have the time to fit a relay to the circuit, the load on the switch is much reduced, and it should last for donkeys.

Check your earths before you do anything!

You could always run another earth wire from either the bulkhead or the fusebox and join it into your lighting circuit!

Just thought I would update this thread.

I took both switches out yesterday as the indicator/high beam one was very sloppy. Unfortunately a spring, ball bearing and in fell out and some of the plastic is cracked so I have ordered two new switches (the light switch checked out OK on continuity and I blew all the dust out with the airline and decided to replace anyway) then I re-read this thread and Old Sea Dogs warning - check the earth before you do anything and wish I had done this as I reckon mine is an earth issue.

New parts should arrive Wednesday and I will update when fitted.
