Hi all

i have a 93 defender 90, 200tdi

recently nearing completion of a complete rebuild, including a new valeo clutch kit.
Problem ive got is the clutch drags throughout the pedal travel, with the bite point being around 1/2 way up the pedal. Truck is very stiff engaging any gear and when in low box will try to move, the props move even with the pedal to the floor.

ive bled, bled, bled and rebled with an eezibleed thing which seems only fit for wanging in the bin.

each time we've bled it, a tiny amount of air comes out then just fluid, and no change to the clutch operation whatsoever. Have adjusted the rod in the pedal box so the nut is level with the end of the rod, meaning im getting max. travel from the master cylinder....

confused!!!!
 
Take the slave cyl back off and make sure that's fitted correctly
If it's still stiff assuming that's what you mean by dragging then sounds like release bearing tight on gear box shaft
 
if it is really getting max stroke and slave and master are good ,no air etc ,lever and pivot are good ,then you could have poor clutch cover ie uneven spring clamping,not common but does happen
 
Was there a spacer on the end of the slave cylinder rod ?

Sounds like slave rod is too short for some reason:)
 
Not had the slave cylinder off at all, would it be worth taking off and checking?

By dragging, i mean when i put the clutch right down, i can push really hard and get the thing into a gear but its trying to move the vehicle, in low 1st especially. Yet the full bite point of the clutch is around halfway up the pedal. i.e. the clutch is dragging..dont know how better to explain at this point.

I dont think there was a spacer, also fitted a hd clutch release thing too. Gonna have another go at bleeding tomorrow..is it more effective to use this ezibleed or traditional method?

er the clutch plate isent in wrong( back to front ) is it? have made this mistake myself previously( late night and tired) if the "hub" of the clutch is facing the flywheel it catches the flywheel to crank bolts and causes these problems you describe
 
We could only get the plate to fit one way comfortably, with the hub facing out from the fly
 
Clutch not engaging properly sounds like Pushrod bent or not seated properly. take slave off & shine a light in & a dentist mirror thingy will help anorl.

You mean disengaging? Will take a look in the morning, covered in brake fluid and utterly fed up for today

Yup fitted a britpart hd clutch fork. Currently got the whole clutch assembly out and on the bench next to the old one. Cant find any major differences to be honest.

ill list the part numbers for the clutch kit i was sent, maybe someone will pick up ob a wrong part ive been sent. Currently debating sticking the new friction plate in with the old pressure plate and see what happens.

The part # on the clutch cover itself is 582833. Which is oddly different to whats listed on its box...
 
We fitted the new friction plate with the old pressure plate. Used new thrust bearing and hd release fork. Clutxh release was marginally but instantly better. Im hoping with some use it'll get better. Thanks for the help all. Can now enter total rebuild stage :)
