Hi All....got a heavy duty torque converter (Ashcroft Transmission' supplied) installed today by a local mechanic. Its working in that the gear changes are happened with less revs but there's a very noticeable "shunt" when the box is moving through the gears. Its very noticeable from 1st to 2nd, less from 2nd to 3rd, and non existent when it drops into lockup (around 50mph ish). The shunt effect happens also in reverse, again most noticeable when coming almost to a halt and the box is changing down from 2nd to first.

I see from a previous post from someone who installed one of these that he reset the adaptive pressure settings in the ECM and his gears changes were silky smooth...mine are now not! I notice from reading up that the ECM / ECU will adapt over time....so wondering if that's the answer or if something else? Incorrect installation of the Torque converter or some other component?

Anyone any thoughts as to what might be going on?

Cheers...Tom

If there any faults in the trans that did not show there heads, they will now. You have the pan cleaned and new filter while you were at it? along with flushing the trans cooler?

Only additional work that he did was to drain the old fluid and refill with new ATF.

When you say problems with transmission cold now be showing up....any thoughts as to what that might be that's causing the shunt? Problem wasn't there until new torque converter fitted today.
Thanks.

so no new filter and clean the sludge out if the pan?

If that was not done then you got, or will have problems as the new fluid will lose the sludge in the pan and trans cooler. IMO the cooler should of been replaced.

It sounds like the torque settings have been altered for more low end torque.

The gearbox is still operating with the old torque. You need to get the gearbox adaptive settings reset. I've reset a few of these.

is resetting the gearbox adaptive settings a main dealer job or which diagnostic tool can do it?

Not having a go at you. But you said a garage did the torque converter? Don't they know how, and make it right?

No it was a local mechanic installed the heavy duty converter for me but he has limited diagnostic gear...he uses a colleague a few miles away for that sort of stuff. I just wanted to understand it myself.

Have reset the adaptive settings and still the same "jerk" especially when downshifting from 2nd to 1st (very noticeable). Should resetting adaptive settings give an immediate effect or does it take time?

Hi All....just to close this thread out....happy to report that the gearbox seems to have adapted to the new TC over time and the changes are now very smooth, almost un-noticeable. Clearly the adaptive settings work but just take time to "re-learn". In my case approx 500miles of driving with the new converter.
