Well, my clutch bearing died before christmas so decided that I would get a garage to replace it and put in a new clutch while they were at it. Stay frosty and get someone else to do it? :)

The problem is that the next day i noticed that there was a tapping / knocking sound coming from the gearbox tunnel area when the clutch is out. I am not sure if it goes away under load but it never gets louder when driven etc. When you put clutch down, the sound goes.

I am going to drop into the garage that did the work on saturday but can anyone give any suggestions as to what it might be?

I spoke to garage already and they said perhaps a gearbox oil change as it may be a bit tired. The noise was not there before I am sure!

Sounds a bit like the release bearing - if the noise goes when you put your foot on the clutch and comes back when you take it off that could be it. If it's new, it coujld be it wasn't fitted properly.

Is it a Td5? They have dual mass flywheel which can make (so I believe) odd noises.

i would say its your new clutch ,it was a big problem years ago ,then they modified clutch plate some cheap and some heavy duty bring this problem back

Sounds like I'm right in taking it back. Oddly. Twice when I've gone more than the usual few miles to work (lazy git) the problem went away. Only to return the same day.

If anyone is still reading this. The latest theory is that it is slight play in the shaft coming from gearbox to clutch. Luckily, it seems to go away after a 10mile drive or so. Strange! :alien:
 
it is often worse when engines cold ,it is very rarely play in gearbox that causes it and wouldnt have thought so if appeared after clutch replacement it will either go away after time or need new clutch plate preferable decent one

Thanks. If it's a crappy clutch plate, whats the worst that can happen? Will it break up?
