Hi all.

Can anyone recommend a good way of removing stripped Hex bolts?

When the garage put the manual locking hub cover back on my Tracker,
they tightened the bolts so tight that the one I tried to remove
stripped before budging (should have been 7 ft-lbs according to
Aisin's assembly instructions). I couldn't budge the others either,
but stopped before stripping them, though I expect I will strip them
on removal, too.

I need to lubricate the manual locking hub because it is stuck in the
Free position. I'm hoping that is all I need to do, anyway.

Back to the problem I have seen a tool to remove stripped screws
advertised on TV, apparently Canadian tire etc. sell them. Has anyone
used this tool? Did it work or not?

I will appreciate any and all help.

By hex bolts do you mean bolts that take an allen wrench or do you mean
hex heads that take a socket?

There's a million ways.

-- Specialty screw extractors, like the one you mentioned
-- Use an angle grinder, a file, or a dremel to:
--make straight lines on the outside of it
--cut a slot in the head
--etc

Of course, the major concern is that you've got big,
thick bolts way overtorqued on an expensive item.
That may limit your option to things that you hope
will not weaken the head too much. On a much smaller
scale, I used a "screw extractor" today; it was from
a discount store, only a few bucks for a set, and it
is like a reverse-threaded wood screw that gets
thicker along it's length. You drill a hole and then
run the extractor in reverse inside the hole, and it
grabs a hold and pulls while spinning.

For the ones you haven't yet stripped, try using a
very high quality box wrench, or maybe one of the
type that claims to grab the straights rather than
the corners of the head.

Oh, yea. Never thought of that.

They take an allen wrench.

You need to get some cutting oil down into the threads and loosen whatever
is causing the resistance. Then you can use your screw removal tool or vice
grips to turn it out. If that doesn't work then take it to a machine shop
before you do some real damage.
