Hi all,

Well I've had 2 weeks of trouble free motoring since buying the p38 but only done about 300 miles.

Yesterday had a flat tyre on a dual carriage way. Nursed it very slowly (10mph) for about 1 mile before I could stop. Inflated the tyre and continued very slowly (20mph) home. Rac swapped on the spare and drove it to tyre centre this morning. Left with front tyres swapped to rear and 2 new fronts.

On the way to the tyre place I noticed a squeal at low speeds and put it down to he spare. Drove it away from the tyre place all ok.

Just driven another 10 miles and squeal is back, it's not there under acceleration (not hat I can hear) but loud when you lift off. I can't pinpoint of its front or rear. Having done a search it sounds very much like this http://youtu.be/n0pQ4A1wWAA .

There is also a noticeable vibration on the vehicle, which runs through the seat base around 70mph but also resonates the glove box at lower speeds.

I'm bracing myself for a bill, any thoughts and guides as to how much possibilities may be cheers!

jack a front wheel up and with g/box in neutral try and turn the wheel using a socket and bar on a wheel nut ,then check the prop ujs any play in a uj and it needs replacing

diff pinion bearing issues normally show up on over run first , but diff carrier bearings could have gone ,but props is your first check as well as vcu by front wheel up test

I'll get it booked in with my local Indy. If it's diff or diff bearings, what sort of money we potentially looking At?

your obsessed with the diffs ,when its quite easy to perform checks, if you want to know price of diffs look on ebay for a decent one

Sorry knee jerk reaction given past car history always default to worst case :) appreciate the help everyone! I'll get my local Indy to check it over, they're a customer of mine and are pretty sound.

Cool, well the my Local Indy too the P38 in this morning at 0830 and called me by 1300 and told me they'd replaced the UJ which has, i am pleased to say solved the problem.

To quote the mechanic, the Prop was "hanging" which doesnt sound good.

Charged be £160 for the swap which seems reasonable.

I also asked them to look at the clonk which happens with the wheels on lock and you go forward or reverse (especially when turning in the road).

They had a quick look and wanted to crack open the transfer box to check out the VCU. They were happy the slip on the VCU was fine, but think the clonk may be spline wear. Further investigation was £180 and £430 for the VCU. I discussed the options and questioned the potential for further damage if i didn't plump for the repair today. I was told that as the slip was ok, the bigged risk was the splines rounding off and loosing drive, i asked if there was a major risk of damage to the gearbox and was told all should be ok.

Given that there was a potential for £900 of work, i do believe them, as i would have expected them to tell me there was potential for major damage if they wanted the money....unless they want the bigger job of doing the gearbox if it blows up :)

Any thoughts appreciated

vcu is in the front output housing you dont need top remove t/box or split it to get at vcu , besides its was rrc that had spline wear issues not p38, vcu not been over stiff or seized is your only worry
