Check pins 11 and 12 on datalink socket EAS inputs. You should be able to clear or diagnose TC if it's connecting to Wabco.

If the OBD socket pins are OK (check them as Wammers says), then look in the left hand footwell, behind the kick panel (outer side of vehicle.)
There are a couple of connectors there which are known for getting water in and corroding out. the 2 diagnostic lines for the EAS ECU just happen to go through these connectors.
Seen it a number of times where the pins are green and horrible and stopping you from talking to the EAS ECU. Most people cut the connectors out and solder/heat shrink the wires together to prevent it from happening again - though a good clean of the pins might sort it (if they haven't corroded too far through) in the short-term.
ABS/TC should be able to read that as it's on a different line to the EAS - can you talk to other ECU's (engine, BECM, gearbox etc) as they are on the same diagnostic wires as the ABS.

Sorry for late reply 
I suddenly had a light bulb moment: remembering once that I had an abs failure due to broken brake light switch, I stated to wonder if abs/tc was causing it not to read eas ecu. I'd checked eas fuses so decided to check abs fuses - low and behold a 5amp fuse on the abs had blown. Replaced it and 'everything worked' - p38 now back up and running

You should not have been able to read ABS ECU either in that case, and would have had no ABS. Fuse 24/5 AMP powers ABS ECU and EAS delay relay. Fuse 33/5 AMP powers data link connector.

You're right I couldn't read tha abs ecu either - it was fuse 24/5 amp (didn't check fuse 33).
