right, to cut a short story even shorter I have a minor exhaust manifold leak and because i didn't fix it, it became a major manifold leak which ended up in a small fire
lesson learnt.
Anyway, all alternator wires burnt.
Replaced them, everything works but charge voltage has dropped from 14.4v to 13.8v so it looks like i have lost a diode in the alternator.
But, to the offside of the engine block is the following block of wires, there is no corresponding wiring, no plug missing it's loom and nothing seems to be adversely effected. However, it'd be nice to know what it is for....
It positioned between block and thermostat housing, although originally it ran under the thermostat with the main cable,
