Landy JK

Put the landy in for it's MOT yesterday, unsurprisingly it's come back as a fail most of it being pretty minor - numberplate obscured by roof ladder, track rod ends etc. All of which I'm pretty happy having a bash at sorting out myself.

However one of the items is listed as:

(offside steering mounting bracket/) steering component is not secure to the vehicle structure [2.2.B.1a]

I've not had chance to look under the car yet to see what this might be as I'm at work at the moment - any ideas? Is it going to be fixable with conventional tools or am I likely to need to get some welding done? Or is this a general comment that could refer to anything coming detached from where its meant to be?

Would like to get everything done myself - save some money and learn something. Any pointers would be much appreciated!

Cheers

Sounds like the steering box is loose, have you fitted a steering guard? Did you replace the nut the box shares with the guard? Check through it but its a bolt on item so I would hope it just needes tightening up...

Managed to have a quick peek under the car last night. The MOT place has very helpfully marked all the problem areas with a chalk pen.

The bracket they've marked is the 'tie bar and cross rod mounting bracket' Numbered 13 on here

I can't get it to budge at all by hand but according to the guy at the MOT centre when the steering is turned you can see movement. At the moment I'm lacking a helper to turn the wheels while I'm under the car so will have to take his word for it.

Any ideas? All the bolts appear to be in place - I can only think one of them may have sheared inside the bracket? From what i can see it's just a bolt on fitting so should be a case of undoing everything checking all the bolts (maybe a new bolt or two) then reassemble? Is there anything I need to be aware of while going through this process?

Cheers

ok, spent most of the day yesterday trying to get the landy up to MOT standard.....still plenty to do tho but have come across a couple of problems I need a bit of help with.

1. Offside repeater isn't working, tried to new bulbs with no luck, theres no obvious damage to any wiring and both wires appear to still be crimped in the the bulb holder, I've cleaned the contacts but still no luck. Where do I look next??

2. Started going about repacing the panhard rod bushes got the offside bolt out but the nearside bolt seems to be stuck, no amount of wiggling seems to shift it. Anyone got any tips for getting it out, the other bolt I just kncocked out with a hammer and a metl bar but the axel is in the way on this side so it can't be kncoked out...

Cheers

My indicators stop working after useing my warning lights but if I put my warning lights back on and off again they start working again!! Worth a try !
