I have now got my freelander shod with 17" Michelin Synchrones after a wheel upgrade.

I'm off camping with the school in June and July and would like other users opinions of the tyres.

I know they are reasonably quiet and provide a good mileage, but I need to know if they will get me out of a slippery field.

Last year I had to pull the minibus and 1ton trailer out as the bus sank in the wet stuff. I was wearing my XPC's and they were ace. (not even a slip or a boing from the traction control!!)

Should I bother to get them out the roofspace or go with the synchrones?? (better looks)

Won't look good if you get stuck!

I had Sync's on the back and Scorpions on the front until recently - I managed to get on and off a very muddy field over Easter at a horse show and both we're on the legal limit. Bit of traction control kicking in but only on the last day when it was getting really bad.

Put new Scorpions on about a month ago and got stuck on a grass verg a few weeks back - fortunately no one was about- managed to reverse out. I think momentum is the key.

You'll definately be better with proper offroad tyres - especially if your trying pull anything off from a stand still. Made a massive difference on my Dads Disco.

I have worn a set of scorpions out from new on a Disco 2 - they were very good when new, but fit only for road use once half worn. I was continually struggling over muddy fields.

I guess I'll chance it as there is a track to get in an out of the location. Its just very useful when you can assist and drag anything out!!

If it rains heavily, I'll throw my 9mm+ XPC's back on before i set out!!

I was planning on getting a set of 15" steelies and some decent AT tyres for exactly the same reason. Assume theres no problem with this as I currently have 17" alloys.

I think it needs to get pretty bad before you get stuck - but on slippy mud there is very little traction with the Scoprions and would guess the same of the Mitches.

I guess it depends on the age of your vehicle. However, 15" steelies were fitted to models with both types of brakes. Why not go for 16's (alloys) as there are more off road tyres in that size. Plenty on ebay and they go quite cheap!!

Good tyres 50/50 . . . .ok not orft road tyres ,but best of both worlds and very quite on tarmac. . . .used mine in sum sticky bits and got through and other 4x4s wiff beefed up tyres struggled [its not wot you do but the way that you do it]

Thanks Ming - I'll leave them on and see what happens.

Worst case scenario - tie a rope to the front and challenge the kids to pull it free!!
